Sichuan Earthquake, China
More than 80 000 people perished in the Sichuan earthquake at Wenchuan on May 12, 2008. The initial response from the Chinese government was very open and for the first time in Chinese memory a civil society emerged to rescue the missing and wounded. However, after just three weeks the gates closed. When I visited, two months after the quake, several parents of killed children had been inprisoned because they dared to question poor construction of schools. In the end central authorities managed to both quell opposition - and boost their own popularity. Reconstruction is promised to be swift.
