In the summer of 2009 massive protests against Chinese rule erupted in Xinjiangs capital Urumqi in far western China. It was not the first time. Grievances against Chinese occupation have been growing in the area for some 50 years and several massacres have taken place. When on assignment in the region in the summer of 2008 political questions were not welcome. Most people were afraid of even talking to foreigners. It was one of my most difficult assignments.
