In the late 1980s, hundreds of thousands of children across 44 countries engaged in an ambitious project to save the Costa Rican rainforest. I was one of them.

It all started when I lent cameras for African traders and migrants to tell their own stories about crossing borders. Then, efforts developed through participation and facilitation into cultural innovation for democracy - across continents and back home - for over a decade.

A Line Across China

As a young student of Mandarin, I bicycled across China from Tibet to Hong Kong. Seven years later, as a political journalist, I did it again to revisit people and places and describe the massive transformation of what was then the world’s most populous country.
