A lot happens when stories move beyond the - fast, surprising, and negative - daily news cycle, when we allow a focus on longer term change, people, and societies.

I have worked on over a dozen long-term projects, the longest spanning 35 years. Below are some of them.

In the late 1980s, I was one among hundreds of thousands of children across 44 countries engaged in an ambitious project to save the rainforest.
Here, I returned to the children and forests to see what happened.

It all started when I lent cameras to allow traders and migrants tell their own stories about crossing borders. Then, efforts developed through participation and facilitation into cultural management for democracy - across continents and back home - for over a decade.

A Line Across China

As a young student of Mandarin, I bicycled across China from Tibet to Hong Kong. Seven years later, as a political journalist, I did it again to revisit people and places and describe the massive transformation of the world’s most populous country.
